The Zone diet is firstly created by Dr. Barry Sears and distributed to public through his book ‘ The Zone: A Dietary Road Map’. It is described as recipes with a low-carbohydrate diet plan, where proteins do not dominate the carbohydrates. This allows dieters to get more energy from carbohydrates rather from proteins or fats. The Zone Diet, unlike other diets, insists dieters to keep a close watch on the calorie consumption while eating: a meal not exceeding 500 calories and a snack not exceeding 100 calories is ideal for staying in the Zone. Serious athletes are advised to ingest 4.5 grams of fat for each 7 grams of protein, resulting in a diet in which approximately 40% of calories are supplied by fat. Sears believes that the diet, which restricts calories, carbohydrates, and saturated fats, and limits protein to the amount required for the individual (which depends on the individual’s lean body mass and activity level) prevents excess formation of insulin and leads to optimum mental and physical performance

The foundation of the Zone Diet is the relationship between the hormone insulin and substances called eicosanoids. Eicosanoids are hormone-like substances that control many vital physiological functions, including those of the cardiovascular system, immune system, and nervous system. Dr. Sears believes that certain eicosanoids are “good” and others are “bad.” When insulin levels are high, “bad” eicosanoids are produced. Dr. Sears contends that his Zone Diet, which contains 40% carbohydrate, 30% protein, and 30% fat, is the ideal diet for keeping insulin levels in check.

The Zone diet is claimed to make weight loss. The process of weight loss is that it suggests to people to consume more protein which has the contradictory effect to the hormone glucagons which lead the body to let go carbohydrates that are stocked up in the liver. The Zone dieting is popular among people who are on weight loss process and those who care more about health. However, there are complaints that the Zone diet is too complicated and is unrealistic to be able to follow.
